Historical Background
The town's origins date back to May 1685 when Crown hetman Feliks Kazimierz Potocki acquired land along the Bug River. In 1692, he established the city of Krystynopol, named after his wife Krystyna Lubomirska. The city remained part of the Polish Kingdom until 1772, after which it became part of the Habsburg Empire. Throughout the 19th century, it was a center for various cultural and religious activities.
During World War II, Sheptytskyi was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1939 to 1944. After the war, the town was initially returned to Poland before being transferred to the Ukrainian SSR in 1951, at which point it was renamed Chervonohrad. The name change to Sheptytskyi was proposed in March 2024 and officially adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 19 September 2024.
Jewish Community
The Jewish community in Sheptytskyi has historical roots dating back to 1740, with a population of 2,200 recorded in 1931. The local Jewish cemetery, established in the 18th century, is a significant historical site. Many Jews from Krystynopol were deported to the Belzec extermination camp in September 1942, and the community's legacy continues through descendants and institutions established in the United States.

Since 1951, Sheptytskyi has developed as a coal mining center, with several operational coal mines located in the vicinity. The city's economy also includes various manufacturing enterprises such as an iron-beton foundry, wood processing plant, tailoring factory, stockings factory, and dairy production.
