Flag of Ukraine

The national flag of Ukraine consists of two equally sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow, as defined by Ukrainian law. The specific shades of these colors are determined by various state bodies, with the dark blue shade chosen in 1992 for its durability against fading.

The flag's design is similar to the flags of several regions and cities, including Lower Austria and the historical Kingdom of Dalmatia, although those flags utilize darker shades of blue.

The blue and yellow flag was first displayed during the Spring of Nations in 1848 in Lemberg (Lviv), a significant event in Ukrainian history. It was later adopted by various Ukrainian states during the early 20th century, including the Ukrainian People's Republic and the West Ukrainian People's Republic.

Following the Russian Revolution, the flag faced suppression during Soviet rule, being replaced by the flag of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The bicolor flag was officially reinstated on 28 January 1992 after Ukraine gained independence.

Article 20 of the Constitution of Ukraine outlines the flag's design, and it is displayed in both horizontal and vertical formats at public buildings. The flag is flown at half-staff as a sign of mourning, with specific protocols governing its display.

Ukrainian flags are continuously displayed in prominent locations such as Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv and various government buildings, emphasizing their importance in national identity.

The Day of the National Flag is celebrated on 23 August, a tradition that began in 2004. This day honors the flag's significance and its role in Ukrainian history.

The flag is also prominently displayed on various national holidays, including Independence Day on 24 August and Constitution Day on 28 June, reinforcing its status as a national symbol.

The colors blue and yellow have deep historical roots in Ukrainian culture, representing elements such as fire and water in pre-Christian traditions. These colors have been associated with Ukrainian identity since the 16th century, with various flags and banners used throughout the Cossack period and beyond.

The flag has become a symbol of unity and resilience, particularly during significant events like the Orange Revolution and Euromaidan, where it served as a rallying point for national pride and democratic aspirations.
