Also known as: 2022 Ukrainian Kharkiv counteroffensive, 2022 Ukrainian eastern counteroffensive, Balakliia Blitzkrieg, Kharkiv Blitzkrieg, Kharkiv counteroffensive, Ukrainian eastern counteroffensive, eastern Ukraine counteroffensive

The 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive was a significant military operation conducted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine against Russian forces during the Russo-Ukrainian war, commencing on 6 September 2022. This counteroffensive led to the rapid recapture of key territories in Kharkiv Oblast, demonstrating Ukraine's military capabilities and impacting the overall dynamics of the conflict.

Initiation of the Counteroffensive

On 6 September 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine initiated a major counteroffensive against Russian military positions in Kharkiv Oblast, coinciding with the announcement of a counteroffensive in the Kherson region. This operation marked a strategic shift as Ukrainian forces aimed to reclaim territory in eastern Ukraine.

Rapid Territorial Gains

Following the launch of the counteroffensive, Ukrainian forces quickly advanced, regaining control over multiple cities within days. On 7 September, Ukrainian troops moved over 20 kilometres (12 mi) into Russian-held territory, recapturing Balakliia and Shevchenkove as Russian forces began to withdraw. By 9 September, Ukraine had retaken the critical cities of Izium and Kupiansk, securing access to the Oskil River and advancing up to 70 kilometres (43 mi) from the pre-counteroffensive front line by 11 September.

Continued Advances and Strategic Impact

The counteroffensive continued until early October, with Ukrainian forces crossing the Oskil River by 13 September and recapturing smaller villages over the following weeks. By 26 September, Ukraine had retaken Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, solidifying its presence on both sides of the Oskil River. The operation resulted in the recapture of over 500 settlements and 12,000 square kilometers of territory, disrupting Russian supply lines and significantly hindering their operational capabilities.

Background and Context

Prior to the counteroffensive, significant portions of Kharkiv Oblast had been under Russian control since the early days of the invasion, including key logistical centers such as Izium, Kupiansk, Shevchenkove, and Balakliia. The region experienced heavy fighting, with Ukrainian forces defending Kharkiv and launching earlier counteroffensives in March and May, which pushed back Russian advances.

Leadership and Strategy

Oleksandr Syrskyi, appointed to command Ukrainian land forces in Kharkiv Oblast, played a crucial role in planning the counteroffensive. His strategy focused on a rapid advance that minimized direct attacks on populated areas to reduce casualties. The operation was characterized by the effective use of artillery, including US-supplied HIMARS, which targeted Russian logistics and contributed to the success of the counteroffensive.
